Full Steam Ahead

Whoa, it's Week 6 already....so much to do, so little time! By the end of this term we hope to have participated in Jump Jam, Basketball, Spanish Cafe, a mini WPS Olympics, Volleyball, Cross Country and more! Alongside this we are working on Spanish food and celebration. DARE projects are due at the end of this term. The requirement is that each pair or individual will make a resource that Constable Andy can use to teach other kids! This is actually really motivating for most of the kids who are really respectful of Constable Andy's contribution to our classroom. In the meantime, Mrs K is transferring (whenever possible) her knowledge about statistics, why we need them and how we use them. Currently we're working on mean, mode, median and range as well as learning how to create an accurate graph. This is a small part of our programme, plenty more to go.... Please, as usual, come and see me if you would like to discuss your child, my door's always open....

Team 18's Mightiest Mathletes...

So this week Daniel made a mighty effort to beat the supreme Elvina.....sadly he fell short by 3000 points yet still earnt a credible 10,000 points or more (and a small pack of Mentos for his trouble!)...

However the Queen of Room Eighteen Mathletics this week was Elvina (clap, clap, clap)

C'mon the others, that's two weeks in a row she's whipped you!!!!

New Start!

Welcome to Max and welcome back to Sky! These two additions take our class number to 24 and the Year 8's to over 50.

In Room 18 we have begun in earnest work on; the Treaty of Waitangi, assessment, Carnival crafts, CV's, letters of application, Camp work, The Hobbit, DARE, All About Me - I Have a Dream and Geometry! Probably more! Ask your child what we're up to and if they say nothing.....come to class and ask me!

I operate an open door policy and would love to discuss your child's education or other issues! I am generally available after school on Tue, Wed, Thurs and/or on manual days if an appointment is made. If it's urgent please email me at kayk@waiuku.school.nz I will gladly find a mutually acceptable time.

PS If your child has any out-of-school successes, I'd love to know!

Welcome!

Hey all

Welcome to Team 18 2012! Mrs South and I are at a conference in Hamilton learning about new educational ideas and resources. We're really looking forward to seeing you all next week.

Camp Bentzon will be happening this year 28 May to 1 June, probably about $250 so start saving for this awesome camp!

We have the manual dates and are going most often on a Tuesday, starting Week 3.

Hopefully you have all your stationary so we can get started right away as we've got heaps to do to prepare for College.

PS I would be really impressed if I saw anyone on Mathletics lol....

Term Four Update

Well Term 4 is here with a bang! Only six weeks left for our Year 8 students and with assessment well under way the time is speeding by. If, at any time, parents would like to come and discuss any matters, please just phone the school 2358453, and I'll make a time to suit! Or, you are able to book a Learning Conference online (see school newsletter).

Dance classes have begun, fantastic! All the students participated and were excellent I must say. We learnt a line dance and revised last years dances with Katie from Stepz. A day later we learnt the Gay Gordon and basic Waltz step in preparation for the end of year Country Schools dance. This is a formal social, not requiring full ball gowns and suits etc, but rather very tidy apparel, dresses for girls and smart pants and shirts for boys. This time of dancing may be the only formal tuition your child ever receives! We love it!

As well as all this, our Year 8 student's are writing their own narratives. We have all kinds of written projects in progress! There are rhyming kids picture books, poetry and short novels evolving.

Athletics is also a big feature of the term. Mrs South and I are endeavouring to make best use of any time we have to coach the kids in the skills needed for shot put, discus, high jump, long jump and the various running events. Already I have witnessed some extraordinary jumping skills (and styles haha)... I am sure we will have these high achievers off the group day after our own athletics day next week.

There is so much happening this term that it is really important to keep a close eye on the school newsletter and website.

It has been my pleasure to teach the students of Team Eighteen this year. As a group they are extremely well behaved, conscientious learners and thinkers who demonstrate initiative and social responsibility. Thanks to them for an outstanding year!
